From the poles to the tropics, the earth’s climate and ecosystems are already being shaped by the flurry of economic activities being carried out throughout the world by everybody who wishes to gain a foot hold in the world and also to find a meaning for their existence.
The effects of climate change driven by human activities are here for everybody to see and experience, and no doubt, there are a lot of predictions, like widening droughts in southern Europe and the Middle East, sub-Saharan Africa, the American Southwest and Mexico, and flooding that could put low-lying islands and the crowded river deltas of southern Asia in the danger zone. Vulnerable regions are supposed to adjust promptly to shifting weather patterns, climatic and coastal hazards, and rising seas. But in reality, it doesn't happen so.
What it leads to is the inundation of coasts and islands inhabited by hundreds of millions of people.
But by many accounts, it remains the closest thing to a barometer for tracking the level of scientific understanding of the causes and consequences of weather changes, leading to scarcity of water, food shortage, unwanted tensions related to sharing of scarcely available water resources, etc.
The species, water supplies, ice sheets and regional climate conditions are already responding to the global buildup of heat. This is empirical information on the ground. Given the current buildup of carbon dioxide and other long-lived greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, temperatures and seas would inevitably rise for decades. The worst effects would be felt in regions that are mainly poor and already facing dangers from existing climate and coastal hazards.
Essentially there’s going to be a mass extinction within the next 100 years unless climate change is limited and brought completely under control.
But citizens !!!
no need to be soooooo pessimistic !
there are certain solutions... and the best thing is...we still have time to correct our mistakes and show some more concern towards our mother earth. Let me suggest...or rather request one and all wishing to get into the Fire fighting mode and help save the earth, a few small but corrective measures are as follows :
Ø Try to do one thing each day that will result in saving water. Don't worry if the savings are minimal !! Every drop counts! You can make a difference.
Ø Remember to use only the amount of water you actually need.
Ø Form a group of water-conscious people and encourage your friends and neighbours to be part of this group. Promote water conservation in community newsletters and on bulletin boards. Encourage your friends, neighbours and co-workers and fellow like-minded citizens to also contribute.
Ø Encourage your family to keep looking for new ways to conserve water in and around your home.
Ø Make sure that your home is leak-free. Many homes have leaking pipes that go unnoticed.
Ø Do not leave the tap running while you are brushing your teeth or soaping your face.
Ø See that there are no leaks in the toilet tank and flush tank. You can check this by adding colour to the tank. If there is a leak, colour will appear in the toilet bowl within 30 minutes. (Flush as soon as the test is done, since food colouring may stain the tank.)
Ø Avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily. Put a brick or any other device that occupies space to cut down on the amount of water needed for each flush.
Ø When washing the car, use water from a bucket and not a hosepipe.
Ø Do not throw away water that has been used for washing vegetables, rice or pulses, use it to water plants or to clean the floors, etc
Ø You can store water in a variety of ways. A simple method is to place a drum on a raised platform directly under the rainwater collection source. You can also collect water in a bucket during the rainy season.
Remember citizen !!!!
Every drop counts !!!!!!
